Something beginning with "R"

On referring to a person's position and condition in life, you may well ask after their mien and their milieu? If you did, you would be using a couple of fairly obscure words, in a not necessarily accurate way, but as I had nothing better to do, I thought I would try them out. So folks, how is your mien today? and indeed how do you find your milieu?

As a matter of fact mine are both fine thank you.

For Information...(Collins English Dictionary circa 1966)

Mien : person's bearing, demeanour or appearance.

Milieu : environment, condition in life.

Hope you enjoyed today's encounter with the letter M. Maybe, tomorrow, I will sample some words beginning with R; Rubbish, for example....

One of my favourite words is 'grommet'.

A word that I like the least is 'only'.

It is the most abused word in the retail trade. Countless price tags ostentatiously (now that's a big word) shout 'only £59.99 etc when there is nothing special about the price.

  Hi David, I agree with you, there's nothing "only" about some of the prices, there's a standing joke in our house, when an ad comes on claiming that something costs "only" X squillion £s we just say "Oh great we'll have two of those, one for weekdays and one for the weekend!"

Hi MarikaSunSeeker,

I'm all for long or little-used words (as you might have noticed) as long as they're the right word. Have to admit that my posting happens upstairs and the dictionary is in the dining room downstairs so sometimes I can't be bothered to check I've got the meaning right (or the spelling for that matter).

I'm still wondering about today's 'portenteous'

Portenteous looks good to me! Portend is a word which carries with it great risk of being misused, but I think that your use of portenteous in its context makes sense. Indeed, I would never be pretentious enough to suggest otherwise!
